Samba! This dance has been apart of Brazil since the late 16th century. It gained a quite a bit of popularity when it became an exhibition dance in Paris in the 1900s, and in the 1940’s it was made popular in the U.S. by an actress and singer by the name of Carmen Miranda.
The music of the Samba is influenced by Jazz and Latin American rhythms and when danced to, the effect is a pendulum motion that is caused by the knee and foot action, which causes the hips to roll side to side. The idea is that the dance looks effortless and carefree.
